Now, remember, this wouldn't have been a working ship. This would have been a burial. This is _exactly_ the same thing as found in Sutton Hoo all those years ago (and since).

Another burial recently unearthed (in Britain) contains an entire armored horse.

A burial like this is also very important because this means there weren't just ten or twenty hairy vikings who took the wrong turn at Albuquerque. This would have been a large settlement with established leadership and society.

Maybe they were looking for trade partners.
The "mound builders" were probably Celts of some kind. They had those Celtic style mounds all over the place in the east. And all up and down the Mississippi.
