We'll never find out the real truth on this one. There are political interests at play, so I doubt anyone will really be able to trust any kind of investigation. His anti-illegial immigration activities embarrassed the US Government by showing what the situation is really like on the border and that ordinary citizens can make a difference (a cardinal sin nowadays.) Not to mention that his activities down there cost the cartels money and drew unwanted attention to their activities.
