This is one of the earliest surviving color photographs. It was taken in 1913 on the western coast of Ireland, and it shows a nameless local girl Yes, there was a world long ago that was ours, and yes, it was beautiful.

We older ones who post here may have shared the world with her. This was taken in 1913 and she looks to be about 25 and I suspect she lived at least 45 years more, being from hardy stock, and made it to the late 1950's. So, it wasn't that long ago when viewed that way.

I really can't understand why there is a significant number of brunettes in Ireland and Scotland.

In England I understand it, it's from the Roman influence.
Darker brunettes in Ireland and Scotland... probably Pictish influence early on, and a soupcon of Spanish Armada sailors later... but even Scandinavia has their share of black-haired folk.
