Rove Rave #2
Yeah, I know, I too have been reading all those stories on antiwar.com claiming that Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald hasn't really given up on taking down neo-con Svengali Karl Rove, that he is pursuing "explosive new evidence," that Fitzgerald will nail Rove's hide to the barn door yet, yadda yadda yadda....
Nyeh......maybe. But whatcha wanna bet all that moo quietly evaporates in the coming weeks?
I think the neo-cons understand very clearly that they cannot, dare not lose Rove in the White House, because he is one of the few people who can control that jug-eared moron and keep him from making horrendous mess after horrendous mess. That's probably how the bizarre Harriet Miers Supreme Court nomination came about; Rove was distracted by the grand jury probe, and Mini-Me went walkabout.
I think the Boys in the Back Room pulled out all the stops. They most likely went to Fitzgerald privately, and after offering him the sun, the moon, and the stars, they got down on their knees and begged him in the name of Amurrica not to do it and to leave Rove in place. In a way, they might have a valid point. God knows what that malignant dwarf would do if left to his own devices.
They may have scared Fitzgerald silly with (true) stories about how without Rove to keep him serene and on focus, Bush might get blotto one night and start playing with the little red button, like the Texas drunk on the Simpsons fires his guns and waves them around around yelling "Yee-haw!" Who knows what the hell Jug-Ears will say or do without Rove and the little black remote control box under his coat?
My guess is the neo-con spinmeisters and handlers did or said something, because Rove seems to have dodged the bullet. My guess is that there will be some more sound and fury and running of laps, then Scooter Libby will fall on his sword and plead out, so there will be no embarrassing trial talking about how we were lied into this stupid, pointless war.
Unless, of course, Libby is threatened with genuine prison time, in which case he might do a John Dean and roll on Rove and Dick Cheney himself. Still a mighty long shot, though.
