Jerusalem of Goldberg

One of the most popular Israeli rock songs of all time is something in Hebrew called "Jerusalem of Gold," written in 1967 to celebrate the seizure of the city by the Jews from its rightful owners. Apparently this is a kind of Israeli Sergeant Pepper or whatever, something that every Jew over there hears and grows up with from the cradle, almost a second Israeli national anthem.

The woman who wrote the song recently died, and before she did, she signed a confession that she plagiarized the melody from a Basque lullaby.

An act of theft celebrated in song by an act of plagiarism. What an appropriate memorial for the Jewish people and the Jewish presence in Palestine.

I was going to be angry about your 'rightful owners' remark... as if the Jordanians were just sitting there minding their own business when the big bad Israelis came along and stole the city. But then I realized that you have actually offered one of only two possible positions.

Position 1: If you recognise that the Israelis gained control of Jerusalem while defending themselves from the Jordanian army, then it is rightfully in Jewish hands.

Position 2: If you say that Jerusalem was taken wrongfully from the Jordanians (despite the fact that they were at war with Israel at the time and had refused to honer its obligation to grant Jews access to holy places in the old city), then it rightly still belongs to Jordan.

Just so we're clear, there is no legally legitimate argument for saying that the city belongs to the Palestinians. If you want to argue that the Jordanians were just holding the city for the Palestinians, you have to wonder why they didn't bother to create that palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital during the 19 years (1948 - 1967) that they had it in their control!

In any event, it's interesting that you needed the excuse of this news story on which to hang your anti-semitism. Why not just say what's on your mind?
