Darkness At Noon

Power outages all across the Puget Sound area today. Electricity didn't come back on until 10 P.M. tonight. 130 years after the effective invention of electrification, and we haven't figured out how to deal with the wind yet.

While I was waiting, I couldn't help but wonder just how many of PSE's repairmen and technicians who should have been at home getting my computer back on line were instead sitting in some godforsaken pre-fab in Iraq with their National Guard and Reserve units. The damage that Jug Ears and his voices have caused us isn't just in body bags and treasure; it covers a wide range of territory. Some states like North Dakota and Mississippi with high levels of poverty, where every able-bodied man is a reservist of some kind for that monthly check, have now been virtually depopulated of most of their skilled (white) labor. Not to mention those wretched single mothers who thought one drill a month was a good way to put diapers on the baby and buy school supplies for little Jimmy.

I wouldn't want to be carrying Jug-Ears' karma. His tab is going to be huge.
